A diagnostic method that uses high-frequency sound waves — not radiation — to form real-time images of the body.
Real time changes what's possible to see
Unlike an X-ray or CT scan, the ultrasound image is built live, frame by frame. This allows assessment of structures in motion — a tendon gliding, a heart valve beating, a vessel pulsing — not just a static portrait of the body at one instant.
A method only as good as the person performing it
Image quality depends directly on the examiner's technique — transducer choice, gain and frequency adjustment, patient positioning. This is also why continuing education carries so much weight in this modality.
