Dermatologic ultrasound: what high frequency reveals about the skin

From characterizing skin tumors to monitoring scars, high-frequency ultrasound opens a window onto skin layers that clinical examination alone cannot reach.

With transducers of 15 to 25 MHz — and experimental systems reaching even higher frequencies — dermatologic ultrasound distinguishes layers that the eye and palpation cannot separate: epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and fascia. This changes what can be answered before a biopsy.

Where high frequency changes management

The most established applications include characterizing skin tumors (defining depth and margins before excision), assessing inflammatory diseases like psoriasis and morphea, monitoring hypertrophic scars, and mapping superficial collections and foreign bodies.

A complement to the clinical exam, not a substitute

The value of ultrasound here isn't competing with dermatologic inspection — it's answering questions that inspection cannot: what the lesion's true depth is, whether it invades the fascia, whether there's associated vascularity. This matters directly for surgical planning.
