Transducers: how the choice changes what you can see
Frequency, shape, and penetration depth — the physics behind choosing the right transducer for each exam.
Higher frequency means better spatial resolution and less tissue penetration — this inverse relationship is the central physical decision behind every transducer choice in ultrasonography.
Linear, convex, and endocavitary
High-frequency linear transducers dominate musculoskeletal, soft-tissue, and peripheral nerve assessment, where superficial resolution is the priority. Lower-frequency convex transducers favor the penetration needed for abdominal and obstetric exams. Endocavitary transducers balance high frequency with direct anatomical access, as in transvaginal assessment.
Optimization beyond the transducer choice
Correctly adjusted gain, focus, and depth often make more of a difference to final image quality than switching transducers. A suitable transducer that's poorly adjusted still produces a worse image than a borderline transducer that's well optimized.
